Kevin Lee Aita
Originally
from Princeton New Jersey, Kevin attended Ohio State University where he
studied architecture and commercial art. After a year in Ohio he
transferred to Oklahoma University. Kevin majored in music and gradually
changed majors over to Commercial Art then Painting ultimately receiving
a BFA in art emphasis painting and drawing. There he studied under
photorealist Richard Wood and Abstract expressionist Eugene Bavinger.
Remaining
in Norman OK after graduation he worked with Terry Miller Design group
as an architectural rendering artist and assistant to the art director.
Kevin also played lead guitar in Nargoe Billeye a local rock band. Kevin
balanced his art career by working various other art related jobs from
designing belt buckles to painting ceramic giftware.
In
1987 Kevin relocated to North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, drawn by the
natural beauty of the mountains and the laid back environment. Kevin
developed an art career in portraiture and landscape and won numerous
awards in local juried competitions.
In
1990 he married the love of his life Gilda Gaskill a middle school art
teacher and ceramic artist. Together they have two lovely children Lina
Anne and Alison Davis. Gilda and Kevin remodeled a turn of the century
house and created the Aita Studios. The studios consist of painting,
drawing, ceramic studios and now include a 24 track recording studio and
frame shop.
In
2000 Kevin received a certificate in AutoCAD technology from the Wilkes
Community College and began working for Lowe’s Companies as a Store
Planner. After 6 years with Lowe’s Kevin has rekindled his art career
and is now operating the studios full time. From here on the sky is the
limit.
Kevin
works primarily with Oil on Linen and paints in, what Matthew C. Foley
described as “Painterly
Photorealism” although Kevin now admits his technique is less
painterly than before he always tries to let the physicality of the
medium to show thru to remind the viewer that they are indeed looking at
a painting and if one looks at areas of the painting out of context of
the rest of the painting they sometimes can appear as abstract or even
non objective paintings. Kevin paints what he is passionate about and is
currently painting Musicians, instruments and their interplay. He finds
that portraiture is a wonderful challenge and continues to paint
portraiture by commission.
